What deletion actually means

Does Deleting an Account Delete Your Email Address Too?

Account deletion can remove active profile data without guaranteeing that every historical, legal, security or suppression record disappears at the same moment.

The word 'delete' sounds binary. Real systems are less tidy. An account can disappear from the product while some information remains temporarily or in a narrower form for legal, security, transaction or opt-out purposes. The exact answer belongs to the service's deletion process and the law that applies to it.

Start with the active account

A deletion request normally targets the live relationship: profile access, settings and other data the service no longer needs to provide the account. Good services should explain what the process does and whether there is a waiting or recovery period.

Historical records can follow different rules

A purchase, charge dispute, tax record or fraud investigation can create retention obligations that are separate from the profile itself. That does not mean an organization can keep everything forever; it means deletion rights and retention duties can have exceptions and boundaries.

Marketing suppression is a useful edge case

If you tell a legitimate sender never to market to you again, keeping a minimal suppression record can be necessary to remember that instruction. Privacy guidance explicitly recognizes this pattern. A retained 'do not contact' marker serves a different purpose from an active marketing profile.

Use the service's privacy controls when deletion matters

Do not assume that abandoning an account equals deleting it. Use the account-deletion or privacy-request mechanism, keep confirmation where the relationship is important, and read what the service says about retained categories and exceptions.

Deleting an account should end the active relationship, but 'every copy disappears instantly' is too strong a promise. Look for the service's actual deletion and retention terms.
